  • When “Danger” really is your middle name.

Today, speaking to my brother on the phone, I was again reminded of how appropriate my 2 1/2 year old nephew’s (his son) middle name really is. My nephew’s name is Dexter Danger.

This is what he looks like. Kinda cute, right? Well don’t let that little cherub face fool you.

My brother got laid off yesterday. Today, he awoke at his programmed 4:15am, but laid in bed trying to go back to sleep until he though he heard something and got up. Upon entering the living room he noticed a few things were not how they should be:

    1. The TV was on
    2. All the lights in the house were on.
    3. All the faucets in the house were on.
    4. The puppy (12 week old Great Dane/Malamute/Pitt/Lab mix) was out of his crate.
    5. There were knives from the knife block all over the kitchen floor.
    6. Things normally on the kitchen counters & in the sink were moved, on the floor and in “wrong” places.
    7. The dead bolt & the chain lock were both unlocked and the front door was open.
    8. My nephew and the puppy were GONE!

My brother bolted out of the apartment screaming my nephew’s name “Dexter!” at the top of his lungs, in his boxer shorts, towards Pacific Avenue in Tacoma, in the rain barefoot, hoping to NOT find his son run over in the street.

He ran back into the apartment, screamed at his wife to get up, call 911, help look for Dexter and was off again, searching the complex. Dexter AND the puppy were found up on the 2nd floor of the apartment complex, across the compound. My brother rushed towards them as my nephew looked at him, smiled and sweetly said “Hi daddy!”.

Apparently, my nephew had to have woken up around 2:30 am, opened his bedroom door, grabbed his step stool from the bathroom and went to town. Needless to say, there are new doorknob spinners in place, new locks, new 90dB alarms on all doors and some really pissed off, freaked out, tired parents in that house today.

His middle name really is “Danger” and today he proved that was an appropriate name….in spades!
